BACE1 also konwn as Beta secretase 1 is a member of the peptidase A1 family of aspartic proteases. BACE1 plays a crucial role in the pathogenesis of Alzheimer′s disease by cleaving the amyloid precursor protein (APP) to produce amyloid beta-peptide (Aβ), which aggregates to form amyloid plaques, a hallmark of the disease. BACE1 localization within the Golgi apparatus and endosomes is particularly important, as these cellular compartments facilitate APP processing, leading to Aβ generation. Understanding BACE1 cellular location is vital for developing therapeutic strategies aimed at inhibiting BACE1 activity, thereby potentially reducing Aβ production and mitigating the progression of Alzheimer′s disease. |
