Apaf-1(Apoptotic peptidase activating factor 1) is a cytoplasmic protein that initiates apoptosis. Apaf-1 plays a crucial role in the intrinsic pathway of apoptosis, acting as a key regulator in the activation of caspase-9, which subsequently leads to the execution of programmed cell death. This process is vital for maintaining cellular homeostasis and eliminating damaged or unwanted cells, thereby preventing the development of various diseases, including cancer. Apaf-1 is primarily located in the cytosol, where oligomerization occurs in response to apoptotic signals, forming a complex that recruits and activates caspase-9.
