CD38 also known as ADPRC1 is a non-lineage-restricted, type II transmembrane glycoprotein that synthesizes and hydrolyzes cyclic adenosine 5'-diphosphate-ribose, an intracellular calcium ion mobilizing messenger. CD38 plays a crucial role in immune response regulation, acting as a NAD glycohydrolase that facilitates the activation, proliferation, and differentiation of mature T and B cells while also mediating apoptosis in myeloid and lymphoid progenitor cells. CD38 is involved in the production of calcium-mobilizing metabolites, such as cyclic adenosine diphosphate ribose (cADPR), which are vital for intracellular signaling pathways. CD38 contributes to the survival of invariant natural killer T (iNKT) cells, a subset that is essential for maintaining immunological tolerance, highlighting its significance in both adaptive and innate immunity. |
