DSC3 also known as Desmocollin 3 is a calcium-dependent glycoprotein that is a member of the desmocollin subfamily of the cadherin superfamily. DSC3 plays a crucial role in maintaining the structural integrity and adhesion of epithelial tissues, particularly in the epidermis and various stratified epithelia, including the cervix, tongue, and esophagus. DSC3 presence in desmosomes facilitates strong intercellular adhesion, which is essential for tissue resilience against mechanical stress and contributes to the overall barrier function of the skin. DSC3 is expressed in all living layers of the epidermis, as well as in glandular ducts and the outer root sheath of hair follicles, highlighting DSC3′s importance in both epidermal differentiation and cellular organization. |
