Claudin-19 also known as CLDN19 is a crucial member of the claudin family. Claudin-19 plays a major role in tight junction-specific obliteration of the intercellular space, through calcium-independent cell-adhesion activity. Claudin-19 is primarily localized in the tight junctions of epithelial cells, where claudin-19 contributes to the selective permeability of the epithelial barrier, allowing for the controlled passage of ions and small molecules while preventing the leakage of larger solutes. This localization is vital for maintaining homeostasis in various tissues, particularly in the kidneys, where claudin-19 is involved in the reabsorption of magnesium. Notably, mutations in the gene encoding claudin-19 can lead to hypomagnesemia renal with ocular involvement (HOMGO), a condition that underscores the importance of claudin-19 in renal function and ocular health. |
