SENP3 is a member of the sentrin-specific protease family. SENP3 plays a crucial role in the regulation of cellular processes by reversing the sumoylation of target proteins, which is essential for maintaining proper protein function and cellular homeostasis. Specifically, SENP3 enhances the transcriptional and myogenic activities of MEF2, a key transcription factor involved in muscle differentiation and development. By modulating the sumoylation status of MEF2, SENP3 influences gene expression patterns that are vital for muscle cell function and regeneration. Additionally, SENP3 activity is part of a larger network of sentrin-specific proteases that collectively regulate the dynamics of SUMO (small ubiquitin-related modifier) modifications, impacting various cellular functions such as transcription, DNA repair, and cell cycle progression. |
