SELENBP1(Selenium binding protein 1) also known as LPSB, SP56 is a member of the selenium-binding protein family. SELENBP1 plays a crucial role in cellular processes by binding selenium, an essential trace element incorporated into selenoproteins as selenocysteine. This binding is vital for proper functioning of various selenoproteins, which are involved in antioxidant defense and thyroid hormone metabolism. SELENBP1 is a 472 amino acid peripheral membrane protein that exists in two alternatively spliced isoforms and is implicated in detecting xenobiotics within the cytoplasm. SELENBP1′s involvement in intra-Golgi protein transport, selenium-dependent cell growth inhibition, and regulation of protein degradation through ubiquitination and deubiquitination processes highlights its importance in maintaining cellular homeostasis. |
