PAX2(Paired box 2) is one of many human homologues of the Drosophila melanogaster gene prd. The central feature of this transcription factor gene family is the conserved DNA-binding paired box domain. PAX2 plays a vital role in the development of various organs, including kidneys, eyes, and ears, by regulating gene expression involved in organogenesis. Proper PAX2 function is essential for normal embryonic development, as mutations in PAX2 gene can lead to significant congenital anomalies, such as renal hypoplasia and various eye disorders, including retinal coloboma and microphthalmia. PAX2 expression in specific embryonic structures, such as optic vesicle and otic vesicle, highlights its importance in visual and auditory system formation. |
