Elastin also known as ELN is a protein that is one of the two components of elastic fibers. Elastin plays a crucial role in providing elasticity and resilience to connective tissues, particularly in the extracellular matrix of arteries, where elastin is essential for maintaining vascular integrity and function. Elastin′s unique structure, characterized by a high content of glycine, proline, and hydrophobic residues, allows elastin to form a rubber-like network through lysine-derived crosslinks, such as desmosines. This structural property is vital for the ability of tissues to stretch and recoil, which is particularly important in organs that undergo significant mechanical stress, such as the lungs and blood vessels. As individuals age, the cross-linking of elastin with collagen can lead to a decrease in tissue elasticity, contributing to various age-related disorders.
