IFNγ(Interferon gamma) also known as IFNgamma, IMD69, IFNG is a soluble cytokine that is a member of the type II interferon class. IFNγ is secreted by cells of both the innate and adaptive immune systems. IFNγ plays a crucial role in the immune response, acting as an antiviral and antiparasitic agent produced by activated CD4+/CD8+ lymphocytes and natural killer cells. Production of IFNγ is stimulated by various factors, including antigens, mitogens, and alloantigens, and proves essential for modulating T cell growth and differentiation while inhibiting B cell proliferation. IFNγ′s active form is a homodimer, with each subunit comprising six helices, and this dimeric structure is stabilized by non-covalent interactions at the helices′ interface. The significance of IFNγ′s structure lies in its ability to effectively bind to its receptor, initiating a cascade of immune responses vital for combating infections and regulating immune functions.
