MAVS also known as IPS1, KIAA1271, VISA or CARDIF is is a crucial 540 amino acid protein that plays a significant role in the innate immune response by localizing to the outer mitochondrial membrane. MAVS contains one caspase activation and recruitment domain (CARD) and several transmembrane domains, which are essential for function. MAVS acts downstream of pattern recognition receptors like RIG-I, which detect double-stranded viral RNA, and is vital for the activation of signaling pathways that lead to the production of antiviral cytokines. This function is critical for mounting an effective immune response against viral infections, as MAVS helps to initiate the signaling cascade that can protect cells from viral-induced apoptosis. MAVS can be inactivated through proteolytic cleavage, which disrupts interaction with other signaling proteins, highlighting the importance of structural integrity for immune function. |
