NGB(Neuroglobin) is an oxygen-binding protein that is distantly related to members of the globin gene family. It is highly conserved among other vertebrates. It is expressed in the central and peripheral nervous system where it may be involved in increasing oxygen availability and providing protection under hypoxic/ischemic conditions. NGB is a hexacoordinate hemoglobin primarily expressed in the vertebrate brain, where NGB plays a crucial role in enhancing oxygen supply to neural components. NGB exhibits a high affinity for oxygen, which is vital for maintaining neuronal function, particularly under conditions of hypoxia or ischemia. NGB′s ability to increase in response to neuronal hypoxia suggests a protective role in promoting cell survival during oxygen deprivation. |
