SMUG1 is a protein that participates in base excision repair by removing uracil from single- and double-stranded DNA. SMUG1 plays a crucial role in the base excision repair (BER) pathway, which maintains genomic stability by removing incorrect or damaged bases from DNA, such as uracil and 3-methyladenine. This process is vital because accumulation of such lesions can lead to mutations and contribute to various diseases, including cancer. SMUG1 functions as a single-strand selective monofunctional uracil DNA glycosylase that efficiently excises uracil from both double- and single-stranded DNA within nucleosomes, thereby preventing potential replication errors. |
