Prdx1 also known as PRX1, PRX I is a member of the peroxiredoxin family of antioxidant enzymes. Prdx1 is primarily localized in the cytoplasm, where Prdx1 interacts with thioredoxin to facilitate antioxidant activity, although Prdx1 can also be found in the nucleus and mitochondria under certain conditions. The human Prdx1 gene is expressed in multiple tissues, such as the liver, kidney, testis, lung, and nervous system, highlighting Prdx1′s importance in various physiological processes. Notably, elevated levels of Prdx1 have been associated with breast cancer progression and are implicated in the pathogenesis of Alzheimer′s disease and Down syndrome, indicating Prdx1′s potential as a biomarker for these conditions.
