ABCG1 also known as ABC8 is a member of the superfamily of ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporters. ABC proteins transport various molecules across extra- and intra-cellular membranes. ABC genes are divided into seven distinct subfamilies (ABC1, MDR/TAP, MRP, ALD, OABP, GCN20, White). This protein is a member of the White subfamily. ABCG1 functions to regulate cholesterol and phospholipid transport in macrophages, and may regulate cellular lipid homeostasis in other cell types. ABCG1 is highly expressed in several tissues, including brain, spleen, lung and placenta, and has been localized to the cell surface and intracellular compartments of cholesterol-laden macrophages.
