Myoglobin(MB) is a member of the globin superfamily and is predominantly expressed in skeletal and cardiac muscles. Myoglobin is a crucial cytosolic oxygen-binding protein primarily located in skeletal and cardiac muscle, where myoglobin plays a vital role in oxygen storage and diffusion within myocytes. Myoglobin is essential for maintaining mitochondrial respiration during intense and prolonged muscle activity, facilitating oxygen transport from erythrocytes to mitochondria, which is critical for energy production. Myoglobin′s structure, characterized by a heme group, allows effective oxygen binding and release, making myoglobin indispensable for muscle function and endurance. Additionally, myoglobin′s genomic structure is conserved across various species, featuring a putative polyadenylation signal and a polypyrimidine-rich region, with human myoglobin being encoded by a single gene that has also been identified in human smooth muscle. |
