BARX1(BARX homeobox 1) is a member of the Bar subclass of homeobox transcription factors. BARX1 is predominantly expressed in the testis, heart, and craniofacial tissues, where Barx1 functions as a homeodomain transcription factor essential for odontogenesis, craniofacial development, and stomach organogenesis. Notably, BARX1 is involved in the regulation of mesenchymal cell expression of two secreted Wnt antagonists, sFRP1 and sFRP2, which are vital for the development of the gastric endoderm prior to epithelial differentiation. During the early stages of molar development, BARX1 directs undetermined ectomesenchymal cells in the proximal region of the jaws to follow the pathway of multicuspid tooth development.
