Aromatase also known as, CYP19, CYP19A1 is a member of the cytochrome P450 superfamily of enzymes. Aromatase catalyzes the conversion of androgens to estrogens. Specifically, Aromatase transforms testosterone into estradiol and androstenedione into estrone, playing a pivotal role in steroidogenesis. This enzymatic function is essential for sexual development and reproductive processes, influencing estrogen levels in various tissues such as the placenta, gonads, adipose tissue, skin, and brain. The associated phenotypes suggest that estrogen functions both as a sex steroid hormone and in growth or differentiation.
