SERCA2 also konwn as ATP2A2 is one of the SERCA Ca(2+)-ATPases, which are intracellular pumps located in the sarcoplasmic or endoplasmic reticula of the skeletal muscle. SERCA2 plays a crucial role in calcium homeostasis by mediating calcium ion uptake into the sarcoplasmic reticulum, which is essential for muscle contraction and relaxation. This process maintains low cytoplasmic calcium concentrations, preventing excessive muscle contraction and ensuring proper cardiac function. SERCA2 undergoes tissue-specific processing, resulting in two isoforms: SERCA2a, predominantly found in type I (slow) skeletal, cardiac, and smooth muscle, and SERCA2b, expressed in various cell types.
