DLK1 also known as DLK, ZOG is a transmembrane protein that contains multiple epidermal growth factor repeats that functions as a regulator of cell growth. DLK1 protein is involved in the differentiation of several cell types including adipocytes. DLK1 is located on chromosome 14q32 and encodes a 383 amino acid protein known for its role as a transmembrane protein featuring six tandem epidermal growth factor-like repeats in its extracellular domain, which mediates cell signaling pathways. regulates adipogenesis and inhibits preadipocyte differentiation into adipocytes, making DLK1 an important factor in metabolic processes. DLK1 expression occurs in tumors with neuroendocrine characteristics, such as neuroblastoma and pheochromocytoma cell lines, while normal tissue expression primarily remains confined to the adrenal gland and placenta. N-linked glycosylation results in multiple discrete forms of DLK1, which may influence functional interactions.
