FoxP3 also known as Scurfin is a member of the forkhead/winged-helix family of transcriptional regulators. FoxP3 plays a critical role in maintaining immune homeostasis by acting as a transcriptional repressor. FoxP3 is essential for the development and function of regulatory T cells, which are crucial for preventing autoimmune diseases and maintaining tolerance to self-antigens. Mutations in the FoxP3 gene can lead to immune dysregulation, resulting in the severe X-linked disorder known as immune dysregulation, polyendocrinopathy, enteropathy, X-linked syndrome (IPEX). FoxP3′s ability to bind DNA through its forkhead domain allows regulation of genes involved in T cell activation and differentiation, highlighting FoxP3′s importance in the immune response. |
