UVRAG (UV radiation resistance-associated gene) also known as p63, DHTX is a 699 amino acid cytoplasmic protein that plays a crucial role in cellular homeostasis by activating the BECN1/PI 3-kinase complex, essential for autophagy. Autophagy is vital for degrading cellular proteins in lysosomes, and dysregulation can lead to uncontrolled cell growth, contributing to various diseases, including cancer. Mutations in UVRAG have been linked to colon cancer, indicating a significant role in suppressing proliferation and tumorigenicity of human colon cancer cells. UVRAG has been shown to complement ultraviolet sensitivity of xeroderma pigmentosum group C cells, highlighting importance in DNA repair mechanisms.
