HEXIM2 is a member of the HEXIM family of proteins. HEXIM2 is a component of the 7SK small nuclear ribonucleoprotein. HEXIM2 plays a crucial role in regulating transcription elongation by inhibiting the Positive Transcription Elongation Factor b (P-TEFb) complex, which is essential for proper expression of eukaryotic genes. P-TEFb, composed of catalytic subunit Cdk9 and regulatory subunits Cyclin T1 or T2, is vital for transitioning RNA polymerase II into the elongation phase of transcription. By binding to 7SK small nuclear ribonucleic acid particle, HEXIM2 helps maintain the balance of transcriptional activity, preventing excessive gene expression that could lead to cellular dysfunction.
