Fibulin-3 also known as Fibulin 3, FBLN3, EFEMP1 is a member of the fibulin family of extracellular matrix glycoproteins. Fibulin-3 plays a crucial role in the structural integrity of the extracellular matrix, particularly in the eye, where Fibulin-3 is involved in maintaining the health of the retinal pigment epithelium. Fibulin-3 is essential for proper cellular adhesion and signaling, and Fibulin-3 dysfunction is linked to Doyne honeycomb retinal dystrophy, a genetic condition characterized by the accumulation of yellow-white deposits known as drusen beneath the retinal pigment epithelium. Notably, Fibulin-3 is absent at the site of drusen formation in healthy eyes, highlighting Fibulin-3′s importance in retinal health and disease.
