APC is a tumor suppressor protein that acts as an antagonist of the Wnt signaling pathway. APC plays a crucial role in regulating cell adhesion and maintaining the integrity of epithelial tissues, which is vital for preventing tumorigenesis. Mutations in APC gene are commonly associated with familial adenomatous polyposis and Gardner′s syndrome, conditions characterized by the development of numerous adenomatous polyps that can lead to colon cancer. APC protein, consisting of 2,843 amino acids, is ubiquitously expressed and interacts with key structural components of intracellular junctions, including β-catenin and γ-catenin, which are essential for cellular adhesion. APC competes with E-cadherin for binding to specific regions of β- and γ-catenin, and interactions between cytoskeleton and APC-E-cadherin-β/γ-catenin complex are mediated by α-catenin, highlighting APC′s importance in cellular signaling pathways that regulate cell growth and differentiation.
