SLP-2 also known as STOML2, EPB72-like 2 is a 356 amino acid protein that belongs to the mec-2 family and is expressed at low levels across various tissues, with particularly high expression in heart, liver, and pancreas. SLP-2 is primarily localized in the cytoplasm, with some presence on the membrane, which is crucial for regulating ion channel conductances and organizing lipid rafts rich in sphingolipids and cholesterol. These lipid rafts are essential for various cellular processes, including signal transduction and membrane trafficking, highlighting SLP-2′s importance in maintaining cellular homeostasis and potentially influencing tumorigenesis, as SLP-2 was first identified as an overexpressed protein in human endometrial adenocarcinoma. Changes in cell growth associated with varying levels of SLP-2 suggest involvement in endometrial tumorigenesis, making SLP-2 a significant target for further research in cancer biology. |
